When it comes to the topic of smoke and fire detection, we often focus on the control units, detectors, buttons – in short, only on the main components of the system – leaving aside all the accessories supplied with the system, one of them is the electromagnetic lock.
Why are electromagnetic locks fundamental components in a fire system?
As part of fire prevention, the structure or building in which a fire system is installed is divided into various compartments: this serves to prevent the fire and/or its products (smoke) from invading the entire building, remaining instead compartmentalized.
Obviously, the compartments themselves are not completely hermetic areas, but must be accessible to each other, usually through r.e.i. (resistance, air-tightness and insulation) certified doors, which indicate the holding time of the door itself related to the wall that compartments the rooms.
Think of a door that separates two warehouses: it is not conceivable to always keep it sealed as it would hinder the passage of operators.
Or a door that divides the hospital departments and must therefore allow the passage of staff and patients.
Therefore, to guarantee the passage between adjacent environments and at the same time ensure immediate compartmentalization in case of fire, electromagnetic locks are used.
These are self-retaining magnets that always keep these special doors open and, when the alarm occurs, the fire prevention system intervenes by disconnecting the locks with consequent release and closing of the door.
In this way the rooms are immediately compartmentalized avoiding the risk of the fire spreading uncontrollably.
The principle of compartmentalization is defined by standards and is one of the main forms of passive protection in the field of fire prevention, and therefore electromagnetic locks are fundamental elements in a fire system.
